Why foster?
You don't have to adopt to change a life.
A foster home gives a dog the chance to rest, learn a home routine and show their personality outside the shelter. It also helps us understand what kind of forever home will suit them best.
A safe landing place
Give a dog comfort, routine and a little breathing space while they wait for their next chapter.
Help them shine
Your everyday observations help us learn what makes them happy and what home will suit them.
A temporary commitment
Fostering can last from a short stay to a longer stretch, depending on the dog and their journey.
A little preparation goes a long way
What to expect when fostering a Romanian rescue
Every dog is an individual, and we will talk you through the needs of the dog we match with you. Some settle quickly; others need time to feel safe. Their history may be incomplete, and life in a home can be very different from life in a shelter.
The first few days may be quiet
Your foster dog may hide, keep their distance, seem shut down or be unsure about ordinary household sounds. Give them a quiet space, a predictable routine and time to approach you in their own way. Avoid visitors and busy outings while they settle.
Some everyday skills may be new
A dog may not be house-trained, comfortable walking on a lead, used to being left alone or familiar with stairs, traffic and home appliances. Accidents and uncertainty can happen. Keep expectations realistic and build new experiences gradually.
Safety comes first
A frightened dog can bolt unexpectedly, even from a loving home. Check doors, gates and fencing, follow MossMania's lead and harness instructions, and never let your foster dog off lead in an unsecured area. Follow the team's specific arrival and toilet-break guidance, including the quiet first 48 hours.
Progress isn't always a straight line
Confidence can grow in tiny steps and wobble again after a change. Don't force contact or introductions, and don't worry that you must solve every challenge yourself. Tell us honestly about behaviour, appetite, toileting and worries so we can help you decide what to do next.
What support will I have?
You are part of the MossMania team. We'll discuss the individual dog's needs before placement and provide guidance on settling in, introductions and veterinary concerns. Contact us early if something doesn't feel right; you don't need to wait until a small worry becomes a big one.
You're not on your own
We've got your back, too.
Fostering should feel like a team effort. Before a dog arrives, we'll talk through their needs and what you can realistically offer.
Vet care and guidance
We arrange and support the dog's veterinary care, and help you know what to do if a concern comes up.
A team behind you
You won't be expected to figure everything out alone. Our team is here for advice, updates and practical support.
Help with the essentials
We'll talk through the dog's needs before they arrive and explain what supplies or other help can be provided.
From hello to home
How fostering works
Every foster home and every dog is different, but these are the usual first steps.
Tell us about your home
Get in touch and tell us a little about your household, routine, experience with dogs and any pets you already have.
Find the right match
We'll discuss the dogs who may suit your home and what each one needs. Honest conversations help make a good match.
Welcome your foster dog
We'll talk you through their arrival, care and settling-in period, and make sure you know how to reach us for support.
Help them take the next step
Share updates and photos, help them feel safe, and support their journey towards a permanent home.
Could you be a foster?
There's no one-size-fits-all foster home.
You might live alone, be a couple or have a family. You may already have pets, or a home that's currently pet-free. The important thing is finding a safe, suitable match for everyone.
- Be ready to give a dog patience while they settle in.
- Be open and honest about your routine and home environment.
- Keep in touch with the team and share updates about your foster dog.
- Ask questions whenever you're unsure. You don't need to know everything already.
Not sure if fostering is right for you?
That's absolutely fine. Tell us a little about your situation and ask whatever's on your mind. If you're based outside the UK, please get in touch first so we can discuss what may be possible.
